Joann Tomsche’s art was influenced from a young age by her painter grandmother and the handcrafts made by women in her family. Her love of color is rooted in a variety of forms ranging from stained glass windows to the art of Richard Diebenkorn. Her graphic sensibility is influenced by the work of Henri Matisse and by her work as a graphic designer. She earned a degree in graphic design, supported over the years by formal studio classes and ongoing, informal self-study. She has had an active studio practice for over 25 years.
In response to the lack of art offered at her children’s elementary school, in 2002 she founded a curriculum-based art program, which continues to thrive. This community-based project led to opportunities to teach in other non-profit arts settings. Joann’s commitment and skill in working with students of all ages led to a seven-year career in the Visual Art department at Idyllwild Arts, a world-renowned international boarding high school for the arts, in the capacity of arts faculty and gallery manager.
Joann approaches art as a natural, necessary part of daily life; and life as an art form. She feels that using artfully made pieces in daily life uplifts the experience of everyday tasks and rituals. Her sketchbook is a daily companion both at home and while traveling. Informal observational sketching of daily life, art journaling, and notating ideas are the foundation of all her studio work. She typically explores images and concepts in a series of pieces, often working on several series concurrently. This is true of both smaller, graphic images intended for her wholesale products line, or larger, original pieces made for gallery exhibits.
Joann’s art goals include making art in some form daily; sharing work out into the world through exhibits and commercial galleries; and expressing through her art pieces a sense of the joy and beauty of life.
