MAC July Student Spotlight: Sofia
Summer camp season has been in full swing and the mild July temps have made for beautiful weather to be outdoors all day! We just concluded 3 sessions of our Art+Nature camps for the season, where we've been tie-dyeing camp shirts, creating all kinds of artwork, going on hikes, and swimming in TJ Lake, McLeod Lake, Horseshoe Lake, and Convict Lake. It's been such a joy seeing the creativity and kinds of artwork the kids come up with for each project. This month we decided to talk to Sofia (9) who loves art so much, she participated in two of our Art+Nature camps this summer!
Why do you love art?
I love art because you can make anything you imagine. You can even make a whole town! Art has always come naturally to me.
What is a favorite piece of art you have created?
I don’t know, because I’ve made so many, and I can’t remember it all! There’s too much to choose from and I love it all. During Art + Nature camp, my favorite project was the sun prints (cyanotype prints, pictured below) we made on the first day where I created different reptiles made out of leaves.
What would you say to a friend to get them interested in art?
First I would ask them what their interests are, then tell them that they can make that out of anything. With art, you can literally make anything you want!
Do you think art is important? Why?
Yes, it’s important because it lets people express how they’re feeling.
What do you love to create the most?
Reptiles!
Is there any kind of art you wish you could try?
I would like to try crocheting. I already know how to felt, and I made a felt leopard gecko so it would be cool to make a crocheted reptile.
Anything else we should know?
Art is the best! Also, I like the MAC. The people who work there, like you, are cool (aww, thank you!) and I just love their art. I missed the Student Art Show this year but I would like to participate next year and have my work in the gallery some day.
Sofia’s cyanotype project really caught my attention, especially the idea of turning leaves into different reptiles during the first day of Art + Nature camp.
