MAC October Student Spotlight: Yahir

With the arrival of an early snow storm to keep us on our toes this Spooky October, we have been having a great time settling in to all of our Arts Classes here in Mono County! This month, we stopped by Bridgeport Elementary to spend the day with our amazing Music Teaching Artist, Miss Peggy, and we got to chat with BES 3rd grader, Yahir, about art, music and how those things help him in his life.

Why do you love art - and what kind of art is your favorite?

I really like every kind of art. But right now the one I like most is painting and creating stuff. I love to get to use different materials like paint, cardboard, and glue.

Do you have a favorite piece of art you have created?

I built a cool car at my house made out of cardboard. It was a Toyota 1865 (it’s a big old box car) and it’s like as big as me. I put it on display in my dad’s garage.

What would you say to a friend to get them interested in art?

I would say you can make anything that you want. I have a friend who doesn’t like to build stuff like I do. She likes different kinds of art - so we just do different kinds of art together. It's really fun.

Do you think art is important? Why?

I don’t really know. It’s important to me because I have plans and it helps my brain think about things and it also makes my brain not burn, because most things I do make my brain burn. Making things calms my brain down.

What do you love to create the most?

I like to make music with the drums. I like bucket drumming because I like the way it feels in my hands - the way the sticks bounce on my fingers. I like the sounds I make and loud music can help make me feel better. I’m also working on a cardboard-metal-plastic airplane. I am even going to get a motor for it and a camera.

Is there anything else we should know or that you'd like to tell us?

I would love to be an engineer and a mechanic when I grow up!
