MAC April Student Spotlight: Brooklyn & Olivia

We've been on the road this month, visiting every school and talking to students all over Mono County to get them ready for the MAC Student Art Show that opened on April 19th! When we sat down to talk to a 5th grader at AES, we got a 2-for-1 Student Spotlight - because these friends both LOVE art and were excited to talk to us about why! Read on to hear from Olivia AND Brooklyn!

Why do you love art?

Brooklyn: I love art because I can express myself in any way possible. It also lets me express my creativity.

Olivia: I like art because all of the kinds of papers and colors and I get to imagine anything I like, and then I get to express my ideas through drawing.

What would you say to a friend to get them interested in art?

Brooklyn: Well, if you’re angry, maybe you can take that out on a canvas!

Olivia: I would say “Hey you can use all these supplies and they’re really fun to use and it’s really fun to do art!”

Do you think art is important? Why?

Brooklyn: It depends on your lifestyle. If you work really hard on something and you want to be good at it, art can be that - or it can just be something you put aside to be for yourself.  Art is important to my entire family.

Olivia: It depends if you like drawing sketches for houses you’re making (like if you’re an architect) but you can also use it for magazine, sketches or books.

What do you love to create the most?

Brooklyn: Right now it’s butterflies, but I’ve done a lot of sketches of people

Olivia: I’ve done sketches of a single character who is deaf and and can read lips!

Do you have a favorite piece of art you have created? Or one that has inspired you?

Brooklyn: My favorite art is that I like drawing some of my favorite characters from shows - it’s Amity Bright from The Owlhouse (left).

Olivia: My favorite is this tessellation I made of little cute cats (right).

Anything else you think we should know? Any kind of art you wish you could try?

Brooklyn: I would love to try to get better at realistic art. I have the eyes down, but the rest is tough! I also love making Chiibi art

Olivia: I have trouble drawing hands, and I’m trying to draw realistic ones - and sometimes I just draw circles bc it’s so hard so I just draw people with circle hands!
