This month we are highlighting our most recently added board member, and former employee, Deja Charles-Tomkins. We are thrilled to have her back with MAC and so grateful for all the help (both hands-on and in the boardroom) she provides us.

1. What is your connection to the arts? Are you an artist yourself or do you have a particular interest in the arts?
My connection to the arts is my affinity for the arts. Art has provided me with opportunities to express myself, escape, and find peace. I do not consider myself an artist in the traditional sense. However, I do enjoy being creative and exploring new mediums. My feelings for the arts are similar to my feelings about the outdoors and its benefits. Both provide humans with the opportunity to disconnect, be present, and heal.
2. What is your favorite art medium and why is it your favorite?
Currently my favorite art medium is cross stitching. I recently learned and was gifted with my first pattern and instantly fell in love. It is my new favorite medium because it takes little supplies, all you have to do is follow the pattern, and you can easily get lost in creating. I love slowly seeing the pattern appear in my hoop.
3. If you could learn any arts medium, what would it be? Why?
I would love to try wheel or clay throwing. It looks fun and like it requires you to be involved. Some of my favorite art is when there are interesting textures. I’d love to see what it would feel like and what I am moved to create in the moment.
4. What is your favorite part of your role as a MAC Board Member?
My favorite part of my role as a MAC board member is supporting the longevity of the organization and helping with decisions that maintain providing arts accessibility for the community. As a previous MAC employee, being a board member feels like a full circle moment. It allows me to support the organization with big picture planning.
5. Why do you think the arts are so important right now?
The arts are so important right now because it reminds people to put down their electronic devices, be present, and connect with our inner childlike curiosity. I have received so much healing and growth from creating and I want others to be able to experience that too. We all deserve to let go every once and a while. Especially with this fast paced world we live in where those opportunities are rare.
