Board Member Spotlight: Scott Power

This month we are excited to highlight another of our new board members, Scott Power. After persistently reaching out to our Executive Director, Scott finally met with Kristin last winter to inquire about getting involved with the local arts community. After realizing they are distant relatives, they immediately hit it off and now we are thrilled to have Scott as an active member of our board, bringing his extensive career in the arts to the table.

1. What is your connection to the arts? Are you an artist yourself or do you have a particular interest in the arts?

I grew up in a musical family playing saxophone, singing in the choir, doing musical theatre, etc. Eventually I graduated from college with a graphic design degree and worked in visual communications at design firms and ad agencies in Chicago. My favorite clients were Sam Adams, Organic Valley and Target. Eventually I became a partner in an art gallery in Los Angeles, producing and curating shows with artists from around the world. What can I say? I love art and artists!

2. What is your favorite art medium and why is it your favorite?

I seek out art that makes me FEEL something new, it doesn’t matter what medium it is. I want to feel something I haven’t felt  before!

3. If you could learn any arts medium, what would it be? Why?

In terms of visual art, I would say Light and Illumination. What James Turrel does is amazing! In terms of performance art, comedy. The ability to make people laugh is a super power!

4. What is your favorite part of your role as a MAC Board Member?

My favorite part of being a MAC Board Member is helping to make our beloved Mono County even more beautiful with art and artists!

5. Why do you think the arts are so important right now?

I think the visual and performing arts give people a way to express themselves and self expression is fundamental and vital to the human experience. And today, as we become more reliant on technology and automation, the arts and creativity are essential to help us stay connected to each other and grounded to the natural world. Art and artists empower empathy and challenge the status quo which is essential for human growth and cultural innovation. And, if we stop growing and connecting, it ain’t gonna be pretty. So, for me, art isn’t a luxury. It’s essential. Always has been, always will be.

As someone who has always appreciated the arts, Scott Power's journey resonates deeply with me. Growing up in a family that valued creativity, I understand how artistic experiences can shape our perspectives and connect us to deeper emotions. His passion for discovering art that evokes new feelings is inspiring, and I completely agree that art is not a luxury but a fundamental human need. The way he describes art's power to challenge perspectives and foster empathy is beautifully articulated. For those seeking a fun entertainment break, I might suggest checking out Block Blast , a delightful puzzle game that offers its own creative experience.
